And all I can say is good fucking riddance. Such a colossal piece of donkey shit. But now I’m down a phone. What would be a good replacement for this?

I use a Sony Xperia Z3 and recommend it to anyone willing to listen. If it’s too big, there’s the Z3 Compact. It works, at least it does for me.

iPhone if you want it to always work + simplicity

Android if you want to customize to death

I work at app dev startups, I’ve always been a die hard Android user as you can customize anything you want. There’s probably over 50 texting apps (SMS) and I’d switch weekly, new roms, new apps, new themes, new icons etc. But there are times where things don’t work right and you have endless choice.

I’m now an iPhone user - There’s one app to text with, it works but it can’t do X. I don’t care, that’s one less decision I have to make today. Everything still syncs, actually more seamlessly and everything always just works.

Sony Xperia Z3. Long battery, waterproof, fast, awesome screen. Were I an Android person, that’s the one I’d choose.

That said, I’m quite pleased with my Lumia 925.

You know, I really don’t get the hate between the two phone camps. I’ve had both iPhones and Android devices. And you’re right. The iPhone is about as stable as it comes. If you want a phone that is just always going to work and you don’t have to futz with it, the iPhone is the choice. If you want to do any customization though, as you said Android is the winner in that department. And, you can get better tech for a cheaper price than a comparable iPhone (LG Nexus series, for instance).

That being said, I currently have an Android phone (Nexus 5). I just like the form factor and the fact that the phone is quite speedy.

I’d go Android - I’ve spent a decent amount of time with all three major platforms, and I’ve easily had the best time on my Nexus devices - though which specific phone really depends on your budget/needs. I’m not much of a Samsung guy, but if I were buying an Android flagship, on contract, right now, I’d probably go for a Galaxy S6, simply because it’s the newest available by a significant margin—most other manufacturers have yet to refresh their flagships for this year. The Sony Xperia Z3+ is another good option. (The plus simply means, ‘new’—it’s not the extra large screened version, or anything. It’s actually called the Z4 in Japan.)

If you’d prefer to buy off-contract, as I do, then I’d say your best choices are the ASUS Zenfone 2:

Or the Alcatel OneTouch Idol:

Personally, I’m holding out for the rumoured Nexus 5 II from LG that’s supposed to be out sometime this year. My Nexus 5 has been a fantastic phone for the two years I’ve had it, and I’d very much like to replace it with something similar. I would happily recommend you get one - it still performs very well - but it’s getting on in years, and with the successor due to release later this year, I wouldn’t feel comfortable buying one myself.

The Huawei P8’s another option, but it’s a little too iPhoney for my taste:

Nexus 5 if you want to save money/can find one. Alternatively OnePlus One. Or Motorola Moto X.

iPhone if you don’t care and just want a new phone.

Note 4/S5/S6/S6 Edge/LG G4 if you want more functionality.

How reliable is it? I sorta-comparatively have an iPod that’s still going strong after 4 years and only now is it have some minor issues. Nothing compared to my 520, though.

What’s the reliability on Androids like? Will it still be going after 4 years like my iPod?

If you're looking for something unlocked the OnePlus One is supposed to be really nice. You can get it brand new from them for 249 (16gb) or 349 (64gb?) or you can check Swappa for a good deal on a used one (or any phone for that matter).

Which phone is that? I have the Lumia 1520 and love it, but it's about as high end as you get in any OS.

That’s really device specific - some devices are better built than others. For Android, something that’s always a concern is if it’s not a nexus device, will it get the next version of Android? Apple has supported the iPhone 4S to date and is said to release iOS9 with improvements that will also be covered on the 4S .. a device that was released in 2011.

If I’m to speak from personal experience, my iPhone 3GS is still going (no joke), from there my primary device turned into a Galaxy S3 that was repaired 3 times, then replace with a Note 2 repaired 6 times and replaced twice - it lasted for 2 years but randomly died a month and a half ago. I’m now using an iPhone 6+.

Main issue I had w/ android and I still see is software updates. It gets rolled out to the service provider, then to certain phones, and you might not get it for forever. While iphone updates are available right away and for a lot of older models.

I don’t have it long enough to report on that (6 months) but the software seems very well worked to me, no glitches or freezes. I used an HTC Desire for 4+ years, but i could change the battery in that (and did, once), would mean much bigger issue with this. In all: don’t know yet, but the signs are good, that it’ll go as long as the battery does.

I just upgraded to the HTC One M9 and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail but the demo one I used was nice. I’d also recommend the Sony Xperia Z3. It’s waterproof and I feel it’s a pretty nice size. I chose the HTC over it for the ability for expandable memory and it was slightly more compact, along with Lollipop over Kit-Kat.

My friends Sony seems to have been reliable I haven’t gotten my HTC yet because I had to have it mailed because of the colour I wanted. Reviews seem pretty positive though.

Not an iPhone 6. I’ve been an Apple user for 20 years, but these things seem to be pieces of crap - I’ve already had my month old work one replaced under warranty after it bricked, and now the new one’s touch screen keeps acting up.
